How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer? (Spoiler: Sooner Than You Think!)

So, you’ve said yes – congratulations! The ring is on, the champagne has been popped, and now comes the fun (and slightly overwhelming) task of planning your big day. There’s a lot to think about: venues, catering, flowers, dresses, suits… but there’s one thing that couples consistently leave too late, and it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

I know, I know — it doesn’t feel as urgent as booking the venue. But trust me when I say: your photographer should be booked as soon as your date and venue are confirmed. Here’s why.

The best photographers get booked up… Fast!

I’m Jonathan, and I’ve been photographing weddings across the UK since 2011 through my business, Ahuvi Wedding Photography. Every single year, I receive enquiries from couples who have found me too late and their date has already gone. And honestly, it breaks my heart a little, because I know what it’s like to end up with a photographer who wasn’t the right fit.

Most professional wedding photographers (the ones with consistent quality, great reviews, and a style you actually love) are booked 12 to 18 months in advance, especially for summer Saturdays. Peak season (May through September) fills up fastest, but even autumn and winter dates can disappear quickly.

So when should you book?

The simple answer? As soon as possible after setting your date.

Here’s a rough guide:

• Getting married in peak season (May–September)? Start reaching out to photographers immediately after booking your venue. Don’t wait until everything else is sorted.
• Getting married in off-peak season? You may have a little more flexibility, but 9–12 months ahead is still ideal.
• Short engagement (under 6 months)? Don’t panic – reach out to your favourite photographers straight away and ask about availability. Some cancellations and late

What happens if you leave it too late?

This is the part nobody wants to hear. If you book your photographer last, you’re often left with whoever is still available – and that’s not always a reflection of quality or fit. I’ve spoken to so many couples after their wedding who chose a cheap or last-minute option and were devastated by the results. Blurry images, missed moments, a photographer who didn’t know how to organise a group photo… it’s not pretty.

Your wedding photos are the one thing that lasts forever after the day is done. The flowers will fade. The cake will be eaten. The dress will go into a box. But your photographs? They’re what you’ll be looking at for the rest of your lives.

What to look for when you do book

When you’re looking for your photographer, here are a few things to check:

• Do you like their style? Browse full galleries, not just the highlight shots on Instagram. And if you can’t see full galleries – ask to see some!
• Do they communicate well? A good photographer makes the whole process feel easy and supportive. They make things clear from the start and give you the chance to ask questions.
• Are they experienced? There’s a huge difference between someone who’s photographed 5 weddings and someone who’s photographed 500. Experience gives a photographer a calm manner – they know what they’re doing, know where they need to be.
• Do you actually like them? You’ll be spending your entire wedding day with this person. Personality matters! If you get an odd vibe about them or they are rude, grumpy or pushy – remember that’s what you’ll get on the day. A good photographer can help bring a fun vibe.
