Why an Engagement Shoot Might Be the Best Decision You Make Before Your Wedding Day

Why an Engagement Shoot Might Be the Best Decision You Make Before Your Wedding Day

Let me be honest with you for a moment. When I suggest an engagement shoot to couples, the most common response I get is something like: “Oh, we’re not really the sort of people who like having our photo taken.”

And to that I say: perfect. You’re exactly the people who need an engagement shoot.

Here’s why.

The camera feels awkward — until it doesn’t

Most people aren’t used to being in front of a camera. And the thought of standing there while someone points a lens at you can feel… well, a bit weird. Your arms don’t know what to do. You smile and it feels forced. You suddenly forget how you normally stand.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. It’s completely normal.

But here’s the thing: that feeling goes away. And an engagement shoot is the perfect place to let it go away before your wedding day.

By the time your wedding rolls around, you’ll already know me, you’ll know what to expect, and you’ll feel completely at ease in front of the camera. The result? More natural, beautiful wedding photos. It really is that simple.

What actually happens during an engagement shoot?

An engagement shoot with me at Ahuvi Wedding Photography is relaxed, fun, and completely low-pressure. We go to a location that means something to you — whether that’s a beautiful countryside spot, a pretty town, or somewhere else that feels like you — and we spend an hour or maybe a bit more just… being yourselves.

I’ll give you gentle direction when needed, but mostly I’m capturing you as you are: laughing, chatting, walking hand in hand, sharing a look. Capturing photos with me is like going for a walk with one of your friends – I we have fun together and I make it easy. But to be honest the best shots are always the ones where you’ve forgotten I’m even there.

The images are yours to keep and use

All of the images from your engagement shoot are yours to keep and use however you like – no restrictions. Lots of couples use them for:

  • Save the date cards – beautiful images of the two of you set the tone perfectly for your wedding.
  • Wedding invitations – why not use a stunning photo instead of a stock graphic?
  • Social media announcements – share your engagement news in style.
  • A framed print – to display at your reception or keep at home.
  • Share with family – it’s always great to give up to date photos

It’s a great way to try out locations

Not sure which part of your area photographs best? An engagement shoot gives us a chance to explore together and find those hidden gems – golden hour spots, beautiful backdrops, interesting textures – that we can then keep in mind for your wedding day couple portraits.

How to book an engagement shoot with Ahuvi Photography

My engagement shoot can be added to either the Classic Package (£1,600) or the Premier Package (£2,200) for an additional £450. Given what you get from it – the confidence, the connection, and the gorgeous images – most of my couples tell me it was absolutely worth every penny.

Whether your wedding is six months away or two years away, now is a great time to get booked in. Enquire here and let’s get a date in the diary!

What to Expect When Working with a Wedding Photographer at a Church of England Wedding

By Wedding Tips No Comments

What to Expect When Working with a Wedding Photographer at a Church of England Wedding

There’s something undeniably magical about a Church of England wedding. The ancient stonework, the stained glass, the soaring ceilings, the weight of tradition – it all adds something really special to the day. And from a photography perspective, a beautiful church is a gift.

But there are things you need to know before your wedding day. Church photography isn’t quite the same as shooting at a hotel or outdoor venue, and being prepared makes all the difference, both for you as a couple, and for your photographer.

Having photographed many Church of England weddings across the UK, here’s everything I’d want you to know.

1. Every Church Has Its Own Rules

This is the most important thing to be aware of. Unlike a private venue, the Church of England is made up of individual parishes, each with their own vicar, and each vicar has their own rules about what is and isn’t allowed during the ceremony.

Some are wonderfully relaxed and welcoming. Others have strict policies about flash photography, where the photographer can stand, and whether any photography is permitted during certain parts of the ceremony (particularly the exchange of vows or communion).

What to do: Before your wedding day, ask your vicar directly what the photography guidelines are, and then share them with your photographer. I always recommend this conversation happens as early as possible – ideally at the same time you’re doing your pre-wedding planning.

2. Lighting Can Be Tricky (But Beautiful!)

Church interiors are often dimly lit, which can be challenging for photography. Stained glass windows create gorgeous, atmospheric light but can also create strong contrasts that are difficult to expose correctly.

Professional photographers, like myself, have the experience and equipment to handle low light beautifully, using techniques designed specifically for these conditions. This is one of the reasons why hiring a professional really matters for a church wedding.

Some vicars permit flash during certain parts of the service; others don’t. Either way, don’t worry – experienced church wedding photographers know how to work with available light to stunning effect.

3. Confetti Rules Vary

Confetti is one of those lovely traditional moments that photographs beautifully – but many churches have strict rules about what type of confetti (if any) is allowed, and where. Some only permit natural, biodegradable confetti outside the church gate, not on church grounds at all.

Check with your vicar in advance. Natural petal confetti is usually the safest option and, honestly, it looks gorgeous in photos anyway! If you want that classic confetti shower shot, just let me know and we’ll plan it into your day.

4. The Positioning of Your Photographer

Many churches will ask that the photographer stays at the back or sides of the church during the ceremony, to avoid being a distraction. This is something I’m completely comfortable with, in fact, I actually pride myself on being what my couples have called “a ninja” or “an assassin with a camera”. My goal is always to be completely invisible during the ceremony, letting the focus stay entirely on you.

Although personally I prefer to move about carefully to capture different angles, some Vicars don’t like this, so I always communicate beforehand to make sure they are happy with me and my plan. I can capture stunning ceremony images from wherever I need to be.

5. Getting to the Church for Prep Shots

One of the loveliest parts of a church wedding is the arrival – the nerves, the grandeur, the guests gathering outside. I always plan to arrive before the ceremony starts so I can capture these precious moments: guests chatting in the sunshine, the groom waiting nervously, the bridal car arriving. It’s about all those great candid shots.

Make sure you factor in time for this when planning your schedule.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer? (Spoiler: Sooner Than You Think!)

How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer? (Spoiler: Sooner Than You Think!)

So, you’ve said yes – congratulations! The ring is on, the champagne has been popped, and now comes the fun (and slightly overwhelming) task of planning your big day. There’s a lot to think about: venues, catering, flowers, dresses, suits… but there’s one thing that couples consistently leave too late, and it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

Your wedding photographer.

I know, I know — it doesn’t feel as urgent as booking the venue. But trust me when I say: your photographer should be booked as soon as your date and venue are confirmed. Here’s why.

The best photographers get booked up… Fast!

I’m Jonathan, and I’ve been photographing weddings across the UK since 2011 through my business, Ahuvi Wedding Photography. Every single year, I receive enquiries from couples who have found me too late and their date has already gone. And honestly, it breaks my heart a little, because I know what it’s like to end up with a photographer who wasn’t the right fit.

Most professional wedding photographers (the ones with consistent quality, great reviews, and a style you actually love) are booked 12 to 18 months in advance, especially for summer Saturdays. Peak season (May through September) fills up fastest, but even autumn and winter dates can disappear quickly.

So when should you book?

The simple answer? As soon as possible after setting your date.

Here’s a rough guide:

  • Getting married in peak season (May–September)? Start reaching out to photographers immediately after booking your venue. Don’t wait until everything else is sorted.
  • Getting married in off-peak season? You may have a little more flexibility, but 9–12 months ahead is still ideal.
  • Short engagement (under 6 months)? Don’t panic – reach out to your favourite photographers straight away and ask about availability. Some cancellations and late

What happens if you leave it too late?

This is the part nobody wants to hear. If you book your photographer last, you’re often left with whoever is still available – and that’s not always a reflection of quality or fit. I’ve spoken to so many couples after their wedding who chose a cheap or last-minute option and were devastated by the results. Blurry images, missed moments, a photographer who didn’t know how to organise a group photo… it’s not pretty.

Your wedding photos are the one thing that lasts forever after the day is done. The flowers will fade. The cake will be eaten. The dress will go into a box. But your photographs? They’re what you’ll be looking at for the rest of your lives.

What to look for when you do book

When you’re looking for your photographer, here are a few things to check:

  • Do you like their style? Browse full galleries, not just the highlight shots on Instagram. And if you can’t see full galleries – ask to see some!
  • Do they communicate well? A good photographer makes the whole process feel easy and supportive. They make things clear from the start and give you the chance to ask questions.
  • Are they experienced? There’s a huge difference between someone who’s photographed 5 weddings and someone who’s photographed 500. Experience gives a photographer a calm manner – they know what they’re doing, know where they need to be.
  • Do you actually like them? You’ll be spending your entire wedding day with this person. Personality matters! If you get an odd vibe about them or they are rude, grumpy or pushy – remember that’s what you’ll get on the day. A good photographer can help bring a fun vibe.
